Benmore house
Description of work
Benmore is located in north Cowal, Dunoon in the botanic gardens. The house
was built in 1862 with additional parts being added later in that century. Today
the historic building is run by Edinburgh City Council as a centre which offers
participation in a range of outdoor adventure activities.
"Benmore House is the principal estate house of North Cowal. The house is
important for a number of factors, such as the succession of well-known architects
responsible for the designs, the quality of the design and details, both inside and
outside and the position of the buildings at the centre of an important designed
landscape." British Listed Buildings
As is the same with many old buildings, maintenance is crucial in prolonging its
longevity. When it came to refurbishing the original sash and case windows, SWRS
were called upon. Before embarking on the refurbishment work, SWRS had to work
around the centre's requirements as it was still operating to full capacity.
Health and safety was of paramount importance.
We carried out a range of restoration work to over 150 windows ranging from
new sills repairs to upgrading the performance by installing draught proofing.
The mastic pointing was redone and simplex easy clean installed to allow the outside
of the windows to be cleaned conveniently. The windows were returned to smooth
working condition.
The project was completed on time and caused little disruption to the centre.
